THAT IS THE PURPOSE OF DISSECTION...

"It was a rainy, gloomy day on Lake Geneva, and a bunch of Romantic poets were stuck in the house with nothing to do. To pass the time, Lord Byron suggested that they each write a ghost story. Nineteen-year-old Mary wracked her brain to think of a good one. "I busied myself to think of a story, - a story to rival those which had excited us to this task. One which would speak to the mysterious fears of our nature, and awaken thrilling horror -- one to make the reader dread to look round, to curdle the blood, and quicken the beatings of the heart,"2 Shelley wrote. The story came to her in a dream. It was a vision of a creature brought into the world by human hands, of life without birth. It would be a story of all that could go wrong when men try to play God. She awoke and began to write the world's first modern horror novel - Frankenstein."

***MEMORIZE THESE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FETAL AND ADULT CIRCULATION!
  1. Oxygenated blood enters the umbilical veinfrom the placenta
  2. Enters ductus venosus
  3. Passes through inferior venacava
  4. Enters the right atrium
  5. Enters the foramen ovale
  6. Goes to the left atrium
  7. Passes through left ventricle
  8. Flows to ascending aorta to supply nourishment to the brain and upper extremeties
  9. Enters superior venacava
  10. Goes to right atrium
  11. Enters the right ventricle
  12. Enters pulmonary artery with some blood going to the lungs to supply oxygen and nourishment
  13. Flows to ductus arteriosus
  14. Enters descending aorta ( some blood going to the lower extremeties)
  15. Enters hypogastric arteries  and internal iliac arteries
  16. Goes back to the placenta
Wednesday-5/15...CW: Fetal development fro video and Ws pop quiz...
ALL STUDENTS ARE ACCOUNTABLE_HONOR STUDENTS MUST MULTI TASK AND STAY AHEAD...
***We work and learn until final exams...
***This is how circulation differs from an adult...

Oxygen and nutrients from the mother's blood are transferred across the placenta to the fetus through the umbilical cord. ... This allows some of the blood to go to the liver. But most of this highly oxygenated blood flows to a large vessel called the inferior vena cava and then into the right atrium of the heart.

Through the blood vessels in the umbilical cord, the fetus receives all the necessary nutrition, oxygen, and life support from the mother through the placenta. Waste products and carbon dioxide from the fetus are sent back through the umbilical cord and placenta to the mother's circulation to be eliminated.

Fetal Circulation. The blood that flows through the fetus is actually more complicated than after the baby is born (normal heart). ... The placenta accepts the bluest blood (blood without oxygen) from the fetus through blood vessels that leave the fetus through the umbilical cord (umbilical arteries, there are two of them)

Fetal Circulation Vocabulary:
1. foramen ovale
2. ductus venosus
3. ductus arteriosus
4. umbilical veins
5. umbilical arteries
6. liver
7. placenta
